The Crabtree POMONA label is reserved for pinnacle Crabtree wines from outstanding vintages. They are extremely small parcels of white and red wines (less than 100 Dozen) that are identified early in the blending process. Their sheer quality demands separate bottlings. Very limited and not necessarily produced every year.
2008
The 2008 POMONA Individual Block Riesling was born out of a need for a new winemaking team to better
understand the terrior of the Crabtree Watervale Estate. The new team is made up of recently enlisted local Clare Winemaker Kerri Thompson, Crabtree Cellar Manger, Brendan Pudney, owner operators Richard Woods and Rasa Fabian.
A key vintage strategy was to pick and ferment separately, all the Crabtree Watervale Estate Riesling blocks. This resulted in 13 separate Riesling ferments providing the team with intimate insights into each blocks flavour profile and unique terrior characteristics. During and post ferment, one small individual block stood out amongst, what subsequently became, a strong range of wines to blend the estate Riesling from. So much so, the Crabtree crew decided to keep the
individual block wine separate and named it POMONA, after the original 19th century name of the Crabtree property.
The 2008 POMONA Individual Block Riesling has a core of elegant and deceptively light citrus flavour backed by classic mineral and steely acid characteristics. The finish builds and finishes crisp and dry.
Just 100 dozen of this Riesling were finally bottled. A testimony to a little known block of Watervale vines that
enjoyed the 2008 conditions and a new team motivated to explore.
